Gennady (Gennadi) Andreiovich Bystrov (Russian: Геннадий Андреевич Бьстров) is a former champion hockey player, and husband of Sofia Kovalenko. He has a job as a courier between Russia and the US. He pressures Stan and Dennis to pay Sofia more money, and offers his services to them as well. After he successfully passes an FBI lie detector test, his offer is accepted.
Gennadi and Sofia's marriage deteriorates significantly by 1987. While Gennadi would prefer to remain married, Sofia desires divorce and begins a friendship with a male co-worker. When Dennis and Stan learn she has revealed Gennadi's traitorous actions to her new "friend," they corner the Bystrovs and offer defection.
Gennadi and Sofia (along with her son, Ilia), go into hiding in separate safe houses. Neither appear to fully comprehend the threat on their lives. Their locations are discovered through surveillance conducted by Norm and Marilyn. Elizabeth accesses Gennadi's, expecting to find him alone. When she realizes Sofia is also there, she attempts to abort her mission. However, Gennadi discovers her and she quickly stabs him in the throat. When Sofia enters the kitchen and sees them both, she too is killed. Elizabeth is able to quietly escape without being detected by Ilia, who is watching TV. Although this means she does not have to kill him, it also results in him discovering his parents' bloody bodies.
