John Granholm was an ophthalmologist living in Newton, MA. He and his wife Natalie have two daughters and a granddaughter.
John met his wife during or shortly after World War II, while stationed in Germany as a US Army medic. John and Natalie are observed by the Jennings to "still like each other" after nearly 40 years together, and Natalie says John is a good man who "thinks I'm wonderful."
In July 1984, John returns from work to find the Jennings in his home, with a gun trained on Natalie. When she confesses that she was a Nazi collaborator during the war, John tells her that her past is irrelevant; he knows the real her, and she is good. Elizabeth then shoots John, followed by Natalie.
