Marion Shepilov Barry (6 Mar 1936 – 23 Nov 2014) was an American politician who served as the Mayor of the District of Columbia from 1979 to 1991, and again as the fourth mayor from 1995 to 1999. A Democrat, Barry’s celebrity was transformed into international notoriety in January 1990, when he was videotaped during a sting operation smoking crack cocaine. He was arrested by Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) officials and served six months in a federal prison. Despite a history of political and legal controversies, Barry was a popular figure in Washington, D.C. The Washington Post once stated that "to understand the District of Columbia, one must understand Marion Barry."
In The Americans, Barry is initially seen on the tv news in January 1982. In late 1987, his activities occupy Stan Beeman's time at work, in the criminal investigations division of the FBI.
