The National Intelligence Service (NIS) is a defunct intelligence agency of the Republic of South Africa. Associated with the Apartheid Era, it was replaced in 1995 by the South African Secret Service and the National Intelligence Agency.
In The Americans, South African university student Todd draws Hans's attention, and is later seen meeting with NIS officer Eugene Venter. Philip and Elizabeth kidnap Todd and Eugene; when he fails to yield any useful information, Eugene is killed by anti-apartheid activist Ruben Ncgobo. Before he dies, Venter tells Ncgobo he and his people are being used as pawns by the Russians, who are simply after "the diamonds, the gold, the land."
